HISTORY OF WIZARD – WESTERN AUTO OUTBOARD MOTORS
In 1946, the Western Auto Supply Company was looking for an outboard motor to market through their catalog and at their retail locations. The Kiekhaefer Company (Mercury) agreed to re-badge some of their existing outboard motors as the "Wizard" brand. The Wizards were usually slightly de-tuned from their Mercury-branded counterparts.
Mercury built outboard motors for Western Auto through 1957, when the Oliver Company took over production of Wizard motors and they continued through the end of 1958.
Production of the Wizard line switched to McCulloch in 1959, and they continued building the motors through the early 1960s. The Chrysler Corporation took over production of Wizards through the mid-1960s. Wizards were also produced by the Eska Outboard Motor Company and Gale Products.
The Western Auto company also used the “Wizard” name on outdoor equipment such as boats, lawn mowers, tillers, and automotive parts such as batteries and tires.
Western Auto marketed the Wizard outboard motor line through 1981.
