This beautiful reproduction poster has been re-mastered from an original advertising poster for the 1975 Goodrich Radial Challenge race at the Talladega Speedway and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The poster features an unlikely combination of an AMC Gremlin and a Ford Pinto, racing on a speedway track. The Goodrich Challenge featured factory compact sedans, on street versions of radial tires.
The vibrant colors and detail of this classic image have been painstakingly brought back to life to preserve a great piece of history.
The high-resolution image is printed on heavy archival photo paper, on a large-format, professional giclée process printer. The poster is shipped in a rigid cardboard tube, and is ready for framing.
The 13"x19" format is an excellent image size that looks great as a stand-alone piece of art, or as a grouped visual statement. These posters require no cutting, trimming, or custom framing, and a wide variety of these frames are readily available at your local craft or hobby retailer, and online.
A great vintage print for your home, shop, or business!
HISTORY OF THE GOODRICH RADIAL CHALLENGE SERIES
In 1971, the B.F. Goodrich Tire Company began sponsoring a unique, professional road racing series for factory compact cars, racing on radial street tires.
The racing program, the Goodrich Radial Challenge Series, was sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). It consisted of numerous races at major speedways and road courses across the country.
Cars eligible for the Goodrich Radial Challenge series included all popular American-made compacts, plus many imported sedans.
Patrick C. Ross, president of B.F. Goodrich Tire Company, said; “The IMSA sanctioned Goodrich Radial Challenge provides two important opportunities for B.F. Goodrich. It gives us product exposure in the important performance tire market. It also provides a source of technical input for radial tire development not available through conventional racing programs where racing tires are used."
All cars in the Goodrich Radial Challenge Series had to use radial street tires, not special-purpose racing tires. These tires may be of any brand generally available to the public through retail outlets.
"The basis for our continued participation in motorsports is the fact that IMSA requires street tires in this series," Ross said. "We do not build special purpose racing tires, and have no plans to get into that business."
The 1975 Goodrich Radial Challenge Series was held at the Talladega Motor Speedway, on August 9, and the Mid-Ohio event was held August 23-24.
A February 26, 1975, Goodrich press release also stated:
“The specially equipped and painted American Motors Gremlin featured at the B.F. Goodrich tire display is the official pace car for the Goodrich Radial Challenge Series of professional road races.
A strong 302-cu. in. AMC V-8 engine can power the stubby little car to speeds of well over 100 mph while pacing the race cars. Special wheels have been added, along with suspension modifications to make sure the Gremlin's roadholding is equal to the task.
The Goodrich Radial Challenge Series is the nation's premier road racing program for compact sedans. Originated in 1971, the series is sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), and offers over $120,000 in prize money. The cars race on standard street radial tires.”
