HISTORY OF THE MAC DUDE RANCH
George "Mac" McCarthy opened "Mac's Dude Ranch" in Lucerne Valley, Ca. in 1945. McCarthy had previously co-founded McCarthy’s Guest Ranch at the site of the present-day Apple Valley Airport, with his wife Irene McCarthy in 1931.
The McCarthy’s developed their ranch into one of the areas best known dude ranches, but a divorce led Mac to start his own ranch. Mac’s Dude Ranch advertised “everything free the day there is a fog on the ranch.”
By the 1960’s, the dude ranches in the high desert of Southern California had nearly faded away. Easy access to more sophisticated resorts like Las Vegas and Palm Springs drew vacationers away from the rustic desert ranches. Encroaching civilization surrounded many of the ranches and the open spaces disappeared.
