JACKSON - PINKHAM NOTCH SKI AREA, NEW HAMPSHIRE AND BOB BUGG ARTIST
Pinkham Notch is a recreation area in New Hampshire, famous for winter sports. It is located on the eastern slope of Mount Washington, about 9.5 miles north of Jackson, New Hampshire.
There are several ski trails in the Pinkham Notch area including Tuckerman Ravine Bowl, Little Headwall, Hillman Highway, John Sherburne Ski Trail, Gulf of Slides Slopes, and Huntington Ravine.
Pinkham Notch separates the Presidential Range, which forms the western wall, from the Wildcat Range, which forms the eastern wall. Two rivers drain the notch; the Ellis River drains the south end and is a tributary of the Saco, and the Peabody River drains the north end and is a tributary of the Androscoggin.
Mount Washington, which forms the western wall of Pinkham Notch, holds several glacial cirques. From left to right are Tuckerman Ravine, the Ravine of Raymond Cataract, and Huntington Ravine.
The bulk of the western slope of the notch is formed by Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeast United States, reaching 6,288 feet above sea level. Mount Washington rises more than 4,000 feet above the floor of the notch.
BOB BUGG - ARTIST
Bob Bugg (1920 -1993) was an American magazine illustrator and cartoonist, who worked for Collier's, Cosmopolitan and several sports magazines. His commercial artwork included a series of notable advertising comics for Camel and Winston cigarettes, and several cover illustrations for trade paperbacks.
Robert Bruce Bugg was born in 1920 into a suburban community in Summit, New Jersey, and grew up in Larchmont, New York. His father was a New York City advertising executive who regularly took his son on skiing trips. At age 14, Bugg skied the first U.S. rope tow at Woodstock, Vermont, shortly after the opening in 1934.
Bugg spent four years in the U.S. Army and returned to civilian life in 1946. When he returned to New York City, he embarked upon a freelance career in illustration, working mainly for magazines. By 1955, Bob and his wife Pat settled in New Canaan, Connecticut, at the time a rural retreat for New York City's executive class.
A passionate skier, Bugg made many spot cartoons, illustrations and cover drawings for Ski magazine from November 1959 on. His Ski assignments brought him to slopes in Colorado, Austria, Switzerland and France for inspiration.
Later in his career, he drew the single-panel cartoon series 'The New Neighbors' (1974-1976) and worked for Hank Ketcham on the 'Dennis the Menace' Sunday comic (1972-1982).
A sportsman all his life - besides skiing he also enjoyed playing golf - Bob Bugg was additionally a heavy smoker. A habit that ultimately led to his death in 1993 at the age of 73.
