HISTORY OF DODGE RIDGE SKI AREA
Dodge Ridge Wintersports Area is a ski area near Pinecrest, California in Tuolumne County, off Highway 108, 30 mi. east of Sonora. The resort is located in the Stanislaus National Forest and operates under a special use permit.
Many skiers in Northern California use Dodge Ridge because of its proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area, San Joaquin Valley, and Yosemite National Park. The winter sports season typically lasts from late November through mid-April.
Dodge Ridge was opened in 1950, by ski enthusiast Earl Prudy. The idea for Dodge Ridge began with a sketch drawn on the inside of a matchbox, and it has grown into an 860-acre, full-service ski resort.
The Prudy family owned Dodge Ridge from 1950 until 1976, when they sold the resort to the Helms family. The Helms family sold the resort in the 2021-22 season to Invision Capital and Karl Kapusciniski.
The owners of Dodge Ridge have made many significant expansions over the years, including new lifts, night lighting, lodges, and snow-making facilities. Lift 7 was built in 1985 and lift 8 was built in 1998. Lift 8 greatly expanded the facilities because it carries skiers to the backside of the mountain. Building these lifts tripled the ski area and significantly increased the number of visitors who are looking for a variety of runs.
Dodge Ridge is a member of Powder Alliance, which offers reciprocal ski passes to season pass holders of various resorts. Beginning in the 2021/2022 season Dodge Ridge began to experiment with "light snowmaking at the base.”
As of 2023, the Resort has 11 lifts with 862 ski-able acres.
