HISTORY OF DODGE BOATS
The Horace E. Dodge Boat Works was founded in 1923, by Horace E. Dodge Jr., son of the famed co-founder of the Dodge Motor Company. After his father’s death in 1920, Horace E. Dodge Jr. began looking for his own manufacturing venture. With his family’s background in the automobile industry, Dodge decided to use automobile assembly techniques to construct his custom wooden boats. The first plant was located at 2670 Atwater Street, along the Detroit River.
In 1929, Dodge Jr. renamed the boat works the Horace E. Dodge Boat & Plane Company, and moved it to a 100-acre site in Newport News, VA. The plant cost over $2 million to develop, employed 700 workers, and produced about 40 boats a day. During WWII, the company built mooring tugs, rescue boats, landing craft, and various other types of boats. Horace's management of the company was unpredictable, and he developed an obsession with powerboat racing that diverted his attention from the business. After expending considerable effort and money, Horace won racing championships in 1932 and 1936.
The Horace E. Dodge Boat Works built some of the most beautiful custom launches and runabouts, and many are now valuable collector's items.
