HISTORY OF CHRIS-CRAFT OUTBOARD MOTORS
Beginning in 1949, Chris-Craft boat builders began manufacturing outboard motors to power their small wooden-hull boats. The company offered the Challenger motor in 1949 and the Commander motor was released in 1950. The motors came in metallic blue, and 15,000 copies were manufactured in 1950.
Chris-Craft ceased production of their outboard motors at the end of 1953, and in 1954, the line was sold to the Oliver Corporation, a farm machinery manufacturer.
Oliver continued to produce the 5-1/2 and 10-horsepower models, and a 35-horsepower model was released in 1955. The company’s outboard motors never took a significant share of the market, but they did create a design statement with their colorful, one-piece fiberglass cowling. Production of Oliver outboard motors ceased in 1961.
