HISTORY OF THE 1935 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT PARADISE VALLEY
 
Mount Rainier National Park was created and approved by congress in 1899. In 1917, a lease to operate commercial facilities within the park was issued to the Rainier National Park Company (RNPC), a private company. The company built and operated the Paradise Inn in 1917, and began hosting winter sporting events. In 1928, the RNPC built the larger Paradise Lodge, hoping to expand their winter operations.
 
The Paradise Lodge became a popular winter sports center, and it was the premier skiing facility in the area. With reliably excellent snow conditions, Paradise was chosen as the site for the 1935 National Championships, the final competition to select the U.S. downhill and slalom contestants for the 1936 Winter Olympic Games. The 1935 National Championships were held on April 13-14, and attracted 7,500 spectators. The championship event moved the winter sports facilities at Paradise into the national spotlight.
